Training for Advancement
Fountain Tire aims high with its sales and management program
Named one of Canada's 50 Best Managed Companies every year since 1994, Fountain Tire
focuses on providing leadership development and strong partnerships among team members in
over 140 stores.
The Challenge
In 2002, Fountain Tire identified a need to train assistant managers and key players so they
could advance into more senior roles within the organization. This secession planning would
provide direction in the areas of management, leadership, customer service and sales training,
Fountain Tire turned to Baxter Bean.
The Solution
In our first meeting with Fountain Tire, Baxter Bean conducted a detailed needs assessment to
determine the organizations goals and objectives. Based on the needs assessment, Baxter
Bean wrote a draft proposal that outlined key features that included some new and novel ideas.
At that point, Baxter Bean worked together with Fountain Tire to modify and adjust the program
to fit the unique needs of the organization. The end result was a comprehensive program, called
Advancement in Management or AIM, targeted to provide succession training for assistant
managers.
When the program was launched in 2003, 24 people were selected to take part in the two-week
training. To provide the students with as much information as possible, Fountain Tire and Baxter
Bean worked together in the training program. The program includes team building, sales and
service training that Baxter Bean highlights which compliment Fountain Tire's information on
internal processes and programs.
The Results
The Fountain Tire AIM program is a long-term program that is designed to build upon the
strengths of the assistant managers within the organization. Now entering its third year, AIM has
made a real difference within the company. Many stores with an AIM graduate have
documented an increase in sales and have reduced associate employee turnover. And perhaps
even more importantly, there has been recognition from customers for improved service.
