Looking Forward with a Vision
Pedersen Transport asks Baxter Bean to help them see the future
Pedersen Transport Ltd. is a family owned and operated company which has been serving
southern Alberta since 1966. The company employs over 60 people who work to provide
overnight freight service to 50 delivery points across Alberta.
The Challenge
Although it is a dynamic and growing company, Pedersen Transport wasn't sure it knew exactly
where it was heading. It has a great team of energetic people and deep knowledge of the
transportation business but the company didn't have a comprehensive strategic plan.
The Solution
Pedersen Transport selected Baxter Bean to provide visioning and planning direction for the
company. The first task for Chuck Bean, President of Baxter Bean, was to meet with the
ownership team and determine the size and scale of the project. After this assessment, Chuck
knew that the team wanted clarity on their vision for the future.
Chuck went away and "turned his lava lamp on" to figure out how to establish a way to create a
positive environment for discussion and debate. After the company agreed to Chuck's approach,
he got down to business by traveling to every location and talking to the managers on their turf
about the strengths and weaknesses of the organization.
"It was a great move to get the team members one-on-one and establish a rapport with them",
said Wayne Pedersen, President of Pedersen Transport. "Chuck was able to draw out the
truthful and honest feelings of our team."
After the one-on-one meetings, Chuck then brought everyone together for a two day
brainstorming session. The main points of that session were to:
- Review - Review of discovery session findings, discussion, debate and agreement.
- Present - 4 keys to effective visions and have a discussion around the keys of highly effective
businesses.
- Determine Vision, Mission And Values - "What do you want to be?"
- Determine Major Objectives and Key Action Items - "What key objectives must be met?" and
determine major objectives that must be accomplished to achieve the vision.
- SWOT Discussion - Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats
From this meeting a comprehensive strategic plan was developed. Team members were
assigned responsibility for the action items and a timeline for completion was set.
The Results
Pedersen Transport now has a plan that was developed through consultation and discussion
with all the members of the ownership team. Each person was able to provide their ideas and
feedback before the plan was accepted. Now the team members can move forward with a
common vision. They are committed to its success and know that it will take them into the future.
