The Challenge
Before the company could expand on its outstanding freight service,
Greyhound Courier Express (GCX) needed to develop a vision for
the next five years. The company, which provides package delivery
across Canada using both ground and air transportation, found
that its departments were working toward different goals and some
business opportunities were being missed. Baxter Bean was consulted
to help refocus the team and to provide strategic direction.
The Solution
At our first meeting with GCX, we defined their overall objectives
and key deliverables, and provided an outline of our process.
Once that stage was completed, we were able to customize our working
materials to fit their needs.
The process began by establishing a steering and sponsor group
that included key people from each department as well as strong
representation from special interest groups within the company.
Next, each participant completed an intensive background document,
providing critical information on past successes and failures,
and their personal view of opportunities, risks and the future
of their business environment. With Baxter Bean acting as the
catalyst, the group was asked to work independently to pool this
information into a comprehensive outline of the current and future
state of the company.
The group then gathered to review the outline during an intense
two-day session. We acted as a coach and facilitator, as the team
collaborated, challenged, defended and debated the material. In
the end, they agreed upon the future vision of the organization,
utilizing four cornerstones of performance: financial competence,
geographic and demographic utilization, and business culture.
Following the team session, we created a detailed working document
that summarized the new focus and direction for GCX. This document
was then delivered to the group for final adjustment, approval
and implementation.
The Results
The new strategic direction has been a great success at GCX and
there is mass support for the vision at all levels of the organization.
Today the departments and employees are working together as a
team toward their common goals.
